PoLAR, the peer-reviewed journal of the Association for Political and Legal Anthropology (APLA), publishes scholarship, analysis, and commentary engaging legal and political anthropology across all geographic regions. The Editorial Board is pleased to invite is pleased to invite nominations and expressions of interest for up to 3 new Associate Editors.
Associate Editors (AEs) are the core of the Editorial Board, and work collaboratively with one another and with the Editor-in-Chief to evaluate manuscript submissions and develop journal policy. Through this work, AEs play an important role in determining the intellectual content and direction of the journal as well as structuring its operations.
AEs commit to 2 calendar years of service (January 2027–December 2028). Each year, AEs participate in eleven 1-hour synchronous manuscript evaluation Zoom meetings, which are held on Fridays from 11 am–noon US-Eastern; specific dates are chosen on a quarterly basis using a poll. The synchronous meetings enable AEs to benefit from their colleagues’ perspectives and to develop consistent standards as a Board. Additionally, a few times each year, the full Editorial Board assembles to evaluate special collection proposals and to debate and vote on journal policy.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should have:
• a doctorate in anthropology or cognate discipline (if the latter, significant interest in and commitment to anthropology is an additional requirement)
• willingness to attend synchronous monthly meetings (and, if an emergency or unavoidable conflict arises, willingness to provide written feedback before the meeting)
• willingness to engage in collaborative discussion of manuscripts and policies with colleagues
Importantly, the following are NOT required:
• prior experience publishing with PoLAR
• prior editorial experience with any journal
• specific employment status (full-time, tenure-track, tenured etc)
