Shivani interviews Jonathan Shapiro Anjaria for the PoLAR Online series, Sustainable Urban Mobility in India, Emergent Conversation 23. Anjaria’s book, Mumbai on Two Wheels: Cycling, Urban Space, and Sustainable Mobility is published by University of Washington Press.

 

Jonathan Anjaria researches and writes about mobility, cycling and the social life of the streets.  He is a Professor in the department of Anthropology at Brandeis University, where he teaches courses on urban studies, qualitative and ethnographic research methods and South Asia. He is also Faculty Director of Professional Development at the Brandeis University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. He is an author of the book The Slow Boil: Street Food, Rights and Public Space in Mumbai and co-editor of the book Urban Navigations: Politics, Space and the City in South Asia. His writings have appeared in a variety of publications, including Scroll.in, American Ethnologist, South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies, City and Community, among others. His latest book, titled Mumbai on Two Wheels: Cycling, Urban Space and Sustainable Mobility was published in June 2024.

 

Shivani is an anthropologist focused on sustainable urban mobility and critical minerals supply chain. As part of India ZEV Research team at Institute of Transportation Studies, UC Davis, her work involves research and analysis on critical minerals trade and governance. As a PoLAR Digital Editorial Fellow, Shivani curated an Emergent Conversation on “Sustainable Urban Mobility in India”.
