Call for Papers: PoLAR First Article Mentoring Workshop

PoLAR: Political and Legal Anthropology Review invites submissions for its newly launched first article mentoring workshop, in which scholars who have not yet published a peer-reviewed article with PoLAR are invited to submit their work for constructive feedback from the editors and volunteer members of the Association for Political and Legal Anthropology (APLA). This free workshop will be held during the 2022 AAA Annual Meeting in Seattle, during November 9-13, 2022, and will provide authors with constructive feedback, hands-on mentorship and guidance on writing and editing, and understanding of the peer review process. The goal is to also facilitate a supportive writing community for early-career scholars. Following the workshop, authors will be encouraged to submit their manuscript to PoLAR for review and publication.

The journal of the Association for Political and Legal Anthropology (APLA), PoLAR: Political and Legal Anthropology Review, is devoted to the anthropology of law and politics, most broadly conceived. This innovative interdisciplinary publication features articles on such issues as nationalism, citizenship, political and legal processes, the state, civil society, racism, colonialism, postcolonial public spheres, and media politics. PoLAR has a broad understanding of political and legal anthropology, so scholars working on a variety of issues, topics, and regions are welcome, particularly those with a critical perspective on issues of social inequality and global justice.

The workshop is open to early-career scholars (graduate students, postdocs, contingent faculty, assistant professors, and those in applied/professional roles). Applications from underrepresented groups and those based outside of the United States and Europe are especially encouraged and will be given priority in the selection process.

There will be two groups, and each will be limited to 4-5 participants, who meet with two workshop facilitators during the AAA Annual Meeting to workshop their pre-circulated papers. The locations and exact dates and times of the workshops will be shared in the weeks prior to the AAA meeting.

Workshop Facilitators for 2022:

  • Hayal Akarsu (APLA Board Member and Program Chair)
  • Sahana Ghosh (APLA Program Chair)
  • Sindiso MnisiWeeks (PoLAR Editor-in-Chief)
  • Georgina Ramsay (PoLAR Editor-in-Chief)

Please complete this application form by providing a title, an abstract (300 words),  and  short bio (300 words). Please make sure to state at what stage of the early career phase you are. The deadline for submitting abstracts is September 25, 12 pm (PT). Selected papers will be announced by October 5.  Papers will be due for pre-circulation by Oct 23!
